How can I check the per­mis­sions of a Prop­erty List?

> Se­lect the file in Finder, then choose File > Get Info. At the foot of the win­dow that opens you’ll see Shar­ing

& Per­mis­sions, which lists ac­cess rights only for what you se­lected. Click the pad­lock at the bot­tom-right cor­ner of the win­dow, pro­vide your pass­word, then edit the per­mis­sions.

How can I change the app that’s used to open a file type?

> Se­lect a file of the type you want to open with a dif­fer­ent app, on this oc­ca­sion and in fu­ture, then choose File > Get Info. In the ‘Open with’ sec­tion of the win­dow that ap­pears, se­lect the app you want to use (choose Other and browse to the app, if nec­es­sary) then click the Change All but­ton.
