Back in 2003, the music industry was terrified of
piracy. Four years after the first release of Napster, the online world must have seemed like a scary place to record executives.
Then along came the iTunes Music Store. In one fell swoop, Apple introduced a safe, legitimate online music store that satisfied consumers and reassured record labels (although they still had reservations about the price structure).
Digging digital
The store allowed users to download songs instantly at 79p a pop when it launched in the UK in 2004. Compared to heading out to a record store, hoping The iTunes Music Store paved the way for streaming services like Netflix and Apple Music.
