How do I stay connected to the fastest Wi-Fi?

In > System Prefs > Network, use the padlock (bottom left) to ensure you can make changes, then select Wi-Fi on the left and click Advanced. In the Wi-Fi tab, order your preferred networks so the fastest connections are at the top of the list.

How do I tell where an IP address is from?

Use Spotlight to search for and open Network Utility, and enter the IP address in the app’s Lookup tab. Further detail may be available in the Whois tab, though you may have to try different servers from its list to get answers.
