Faster and funkier than ever

- Carr ie Mars hall

This update brings a big new feature: machine learning.

It’s called Automix AI, and it can do the DJing for you… sort of. It does a good job of mixing between tracks based on real DJs’ sets, creating fades and applying EQ and filters. Now, we’ve got some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that Automix AI starts to falter if you go beyond dance music. The good news is the next version probably won’t.

The view now includes up to four decks, and the new media library makes it easy to bring in music from iTunes and Spotify. You can create playlists across multiple sources, and the Smart Playlists feature makes it easy to narrow down for specific genres or tempos. Split mode also shows sources side by side, and PhotoBeat lets you drag photos onto the decks for a beat-matched slideshow.

There’s also a new audio engine, you can apply effects post-fader, and there’s a new keyboard shortcut editor. It’s useful, but also a reminder that a laptop is not the ideal platform for a DJ without dedicated hardware; the interface is clear and well thought-out, but it’s a virtual representation of something tactile.
