Know what you need

What’s the best way to avoid spending more than you should? Knowing what you’ll use the Mac for. Do you need powerful parts, or will a simpler Mac do the job? Do your research, read reviews and make sure you make an informed decision before you overspend.

Be active but patient

If you’re not in a hurry, wait until the big sales, like Black Friday, for the best deals. At the same time, if you see a top deal or a clearance Mac that you want, make a move before it’s gone!

Shop around

Whatever you do, don’t just buy a Mac from the first shop you find – see what other sellers charge. If you find a seller that has a great warranty but high prices, see if they will price match. TechRadar has a good price-checking tool; use it to explore your options. Only buy once you’re happy you have a great deal.

Check before you buy

If you’re buying a secondhand Mac, view it in person if possible. It is a good idea to check its battery cycle count and other indications of overall health. You don’t want to negate your savings by having to spend on repairs.

Protect your purchase

If you spend a lot of money on a Mac, protect it with a warranty or insurance policy. If prices are similar, consider buying it from the retailer with the best warranty.

Know your rights

The rights you get when you buy a Mac depend on a lot of things, such as whether it’s second-hand and whether you bought it from a retailer or an individual. Read up on what you’re entitled to in order to avoid any nasty surprises.
