Access iCloud in Windows

Hook up your iCloud account to Boot Camp or a Windows PC

-

Do you work with a Windows PC as well as Apple devices, or dip into Boot Camp on your Mac? Then you should arm yourself with Apple’s iCloud for Windows utility

(bit.ly/icforwin). As with regular iCloud accounts set up through macOS or iOS, installing it earns you 5GB of iCloud storage, which can be upgraded if you find it’s getting full.

The software lets you sync an iCloud Photo Library with your PC. It also syncs email accounts and browser bookmarks.

iCloud Drive is added to the Windows directory tree, so it appears in Windows Explorer, and your messages, tasks and reminders are synced between iCloud and Outlook. Naturally, Apple can’t import messages from every account already set up in Outlook, so only the @icloud.com address that’s created when you sign up for iCloud is synced (as well as older @me.com and @mac.com addresses).

As with Safari on the Mac, you can use iCloud for Windows to synchronise your bookmarks and tabs with your preferred browser. Unfortunately, if you switch between multiple browsers on Windows it won’t update them all, but it does support Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google Chrome. At present there’s no support for Edge, which is Microsoft’s preferred browser for Windows 10.

If your content isn’t updating between Windows and iCloud, check that the necessary add-ins for Outlook are active. Switch to Outlook’s File tab, then click Options (left panel), followed by Add-ins. If iCloud appears under either Inactive or Disabled Add-ins, select COM Add-ins from the Manage menu at the bottom of the panel, then click OK. You may need to restart Outlook or even your computer for the changes to take effect.
