EXPLAINED… Biometrics in iOS

1 Touch ID scanning

Fingerprint data (an analysis, not an image, of your fingerprint) is stored in the Secure Enclave.

2 Fingerprint access

When a process requires Touch ID, it asks the Secure Enclave to verify your fingerprint.

3 Face ID scanning

When you scan your face on an iPhone X, biometric data from the camera goes into the Secure Enclave.

4 Facial data access

Reassuringly, no data about your face ever leaves the Secure Enclave, only authentication codes.
