A smart home is not just about crazy lights or audio on command, clever gadgets can help you create a healthier, more comfortable environment

This summer, eh? Unless you napped through the whole thing – and, honestly, I’d forgive you for that – you’ll have noticed that, at times, it was uncomfortably warm. Naturally, my thoughts turned to some kind of smart air conditioning system, my browser headed to online shops, and my crest well and truly fell. Pickings are slim in that department, particularly in the usually frigid UK.

But that’s the great thing about being a smart home tinkerer. Turning basic hardware into smart kit is, with a little thinking, just a small part of the process. You can take a basic air conditioner, make it yours, simplify and automate the process of switching it on, save energy and money – and, most importantly, add it to your growing roster of interconnected hardware. The rain may have come before I hit the button to buy, but next year I’ll be ready.
