Apple makes syncing photos via iCloud very easy, though its standard 5GB of free cloud storage is still paltry. It also offers AirDrop on macOS and iOS, which lets you transfer files between your devices wirelessly. But if you need to go outside Apple’s software system, things get decidedly more fiddly. PhotoSync for iOS seeks to fill this gap, offering transfer of your photos to and from almost any destination.

The app reads from your Camera Roll and can see all your albums, as well as offering import from compatible storage devices like wireless USB drives and hard drives. Wi-Fi compatible memory cards are also supported with a Premium purchase (£5.99 per year, or various subscriptions options available). A free companion app for Mac and Windows can be used to transfer images between devices using Wi-Fi, though internet connectivity is not required. If you do go online, a wide range of cloud services are supported, like Dropbox, Box.com, OneDrive, Google Drive, and more.

There’s WebDAV, SMB and FTP server functionality, letting you directly access your own web space or make automatic or manual backups to a NAS drive, with all major brands natively supported. All of this is of course configurable, and while you’ll likely only be using a few of the options, your service of choice will almost certainly be on hand.

Extra features

The app is free but some features require a Premium membership, and in free mode, files are compressed by default before being transferred. Premium features include auto transfer of all new images, wireless flash drive support, instant transfer from PhotoSync’s own camera, and Canon EOS Wi-Fi auto download.

PhotoSync’s other big draw is that it’s cross-platform. You can beam images from iOS to Android, from iPhone to Windows and so on, without lots of setup.

A slight question hangs over who exactly this app is for: regular users are probably happy with iCloud and AirDrop, and pros will be using software like Lightroom or Capture One. Nonetheless, PhotoSync will fulfil a need for some users who need crossplatform image backup and transfer without wanting to send everything via the web. HOLLIN JONES
