USB DILEMMAS
The EU has recently announced that phone manufacturers may have to use the USB-C connector, instead of Lightning. Apple is trying to reject this as they argue it will make their phones less slim. All I care about is the connector working. I am currently in a taxi on the way to the airport and my lead keeps reporting that it may not be supported. If USB-C stopped this happening, I would be delighted with a tiny increase in the thickness of my phone. Could that also be an excuse to increase the battery capacity so I can have it last a full day? Bring on USB-C!

Moving to USB-C makes complete sense to us too – the Mac has it, the iPad Pro has it and having to use different connectors for different devices is maddening - especially when you consider how many times Apple has changed the ports on its Macs in recent years. However, Apple reasons that mandating USB-C would create mountains of electronic waste and in a submission to the EU said: “We do not believe there is a case for regulation given the industry is already moving to the use of USB Type-C through a connector or cable assembly. This includes Apple’s USB-C power adapter which is compatible with all iPhone and iPad devices. This approach is more affordable and convenient for consumers, enables charging for a wide range of portable electronic products, encourages people to re-use their charger and allows for innovation.”
