1 View by…
Click these buttons to display shots in timebased collections. The All Photos option displays thousands of same-sized thumbnails. Click Days to condense thumbnails into an easy-to-browse range of thumbnail sizes.
2 Making memories
You can click here to discover Memories automatically created by Photos. The app tends to gather a collection of images that share the same time and location.
3 Media types
This collection of albums automatically displays photos and clips according to specific properties. For example, the Selfies option gathers pictures of faces that were captured by your iPhone’s front camera.
4 Manual albums
Instead of relying on Photo’s automated albums you can create and manually populate your own, or create a Smart Album to automatically gather pictures with a particular property.
5 Metadata
Click here to summon a photo’s Info panel, which you can modify to become even more organised (see walkthrough on opposite page).
You’ll find images imported into your Mac’s Photos app are stored inside the Photos Library. photolibrary file. This selfcontained file is not designed to let you browse for images by rummaging through its collection of sub folders (although if you ≈-click on the file you can choose to Show Package Contents and take a peak in the Originals folder). However, we’d strongly advise that you explore the contents of the Photos Library by using the Photos app itself, as it provides powerful tools for getting your images and video clips organised.
Since the Photos Library hides its folders, some photographers prefer to store their shots in easy-to-access labelled folders – especially if they use third-party apps, such as Photoshop. They can then browse to the relevant folder from within their chosen app, edit an image and then save it into another folder. As mentioned, you can use your Mac’s Image Capture app to import shots from locations such as a memory card into custom folders. If you use Image Capture then your best organising option is to label your folders using the location and date of your shoot.
Automatic organisation
If you import shots directly into Photos then you don’t need to rely on your own memory to help you hunt down your favourite stills or clips. Your
