HOW TO Plan a route on your iPhone with Maps

1 Set a destination

Launch Maps and tap in the search box. Start typing an address, or the name, such as a restaurant or place of interest (POI). Alternatively, scroll around the map and then tap and hold to drop a pin at your chosen destination.

2 Set a starting point

Whichever method you used to set a destination, you should see a blue Directions button. Tap it. Tap My Location to set a starting point if it’s not your current location. Select a place from the list or type in a location.

3 Get directions

Tap Route, then tap Leaving Now if you’re not leaving immediately to set a time and date. Tap one of the modes of transport then scroll through the list to see the options. Tap one to see the details of the route. Tap Done.

4 Find bus times

Tap Go when you’re ready to leave to see live information and get instructions. If you’re taking public transport, you can tap the ‘…’ button to see details of, say, when the next bus is due at the stop you’re heading for.

7 Preview a location

Tap and hold or click on a location on the map and drop a pin. Select the thumbnail preview, just above the location details to see the street level Look Around view. Tap on the road to ‘travel’ along it or swipe to look around.

5 Use driving directions

When you tap Go for driving directions, you’ll hear an audio message telling you where to go. To turn audio directions off or set them to alerts only, tap the loudspeaker icon and choose the option you want for your journey.

8 Add a favourite

If you plan to visit a place regularly, tap the ‘…’ button next to the Directions button and choose Add to Favourites. It will now appear on the Favourites list on the main screen. You can also add it to a contact from here.

6 Adjust the details

In addition to a choice of routes, you can specify that you want to avoid things like toll roads and motorways. Scroll to the bottom of the list of routes in the Directions screen and toggle the switches under Avoid.

9 Pin a transit route

Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and tap the ‘+’ under Favourites, then tap Nearby Public Transport. Tap the Public Transport favourite. When you see the bus or train line you want to pin, swipe right over it to pin it.
