HOW TO Control devices with Apple Watch

-

1 Get snap happy

The Camera Remote app on your Watch enables you to control your iPhone camera and works as a real time viewfinder. It’s really simple: there’s a big shutter button in the lower centre and a ‘…’ button to the right for more options.

2 Change your camera

If you tap on the ‘…’ button next to the shutter, you can switch between your iPhone’s front and rear cameras, adjust the flash settings and change the countdown timer that starts when you tap on the shutter button.

3 Control your home

The Home app on your Watch enables you to adjust individual smart home kit, so for example here we’re looking at some of the Hue smart bulbs we have in our living room. Again, tapping ‘…’ brings up more settings.

4 Set the scene

If you’ve set up favourite scenes in the Home app on your iPhone, you’ll find them here too. Simply tap on the scene you want to activate. In this screenshot everything is grey, which means the scenes are all off.

5 Use Smart Home apps

You don’t need to use Apple’s Home app if you don’t want to. Many smart home firms have their own smart home apps. This one here is the Hive app for smart heating; we’ve also got a dedicated Philips Hue app for controlling our lights.

6 Control your music

In the Music app, you can decide which devices should be playing your selected soundtrack. To do that, tap on the AirPlay icon in the bottom left of the screen and you’ll see a list of the available devices on your network.

7 Select your speakers

To change the selected device for playback, all you need to do is tap on it. You’ll then see a little red check mark appear to the right of it, so here we’ve selected our HomePods to play our music. Tap again to revert to your phone.

8 Control your TV

The Remote app enables you to control compatible devices including Apple TV and Mac. When you open it, scroll to the device you want to control and tap on its picture. The display will change to show you a simple controller.

9 Tame your television

It’s very straightforward; if the TV isn’t already on, tap on the TV icon and it’ll switch itself on. You can then use the directional arrows and the Select button to control the on-screen display and find something to watch via your Watch.
