Always-On display, better cameras

Apple always pulls something magical out of the bag for its flagship iPhone and this year’s model is no exception. Living up to its ‘Far Out’ billing, the new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max not only feature massively improved cameras, but also include new Always-On Retina XDR displays, plus a new feature: the Dynamic Island. Centred around the smaller TrueDepth camera, the Dynamic Island is touted by Apple as an “interactive user experience” that can contain anything from notifications to easy access controls that you can use with a simple tap-and-hold. That means, in iOS 16, you can see and interact with background apps like Maps, Music and timers with third-party apps also supported.

Variable refresh

The Always-On display, meanwhile, takes one of the much-loved features of the Apple Watch Series 5 and later and applies it to iPhone, with the variable refresh rate (going as low as 1Hz) and other powersaving technologies preserving battery life while also helping you make the most of the customisable Lock Screen features that are being included in iOS 16.

Apple says the 6.1in iPhone 14 Pro should last for up to 23 hours when watching video, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max should last for up to 29 hours despite its larger 6.7in display.

Inside, both iPhone 14 Pro models now boast Apple’s A16 Bionic chip, which contains a 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine, plus the phone also comes with a high-g accelerometer and improved GPS sensors that work with the iPhone’s built-in barometer and microphone to help with Crash Detection – a feature that enables the iPhone to tell whether you’ve been involved in an accident and offer to contact both the emergency services and your emergency contacts.

The new iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are available in four striking colours: Space Black, Silver, Gold and Deep Purple, with prices starting on models with 128GB of storage at £1,099 for the 6.1in Pro and £1,199 for the 6.7in Pro Max. You can also choose from 256GB, 512GB and 1TB of storage at extra cost.
