HOW TO Use Maps on your Apple Watch and iPhone
1 See suggestions
Suggestions is a handy feature on Maps, which appears when you open the Maps app and scroll down. Your iPhone and Watch learn your routines and suggest locations: we usually visit the place above on the same day every week.
4 Choose your journey
You can choose between multiple travel modes: walking, driving and public transport. In many places you can also get cycling-specific directions, which will highlight stairs, steep slopes and other potential problems.
7 See what’s available
If you’re not sure where you are, scroll down in the main screen until you see Location. If you tap the three dots, lower right, you can toggle between the standard map and the one showing the public transport hubs.
2 Travel in time
Unless you clear it, Maps remembers directions that you’ve previously asked for. If you’ve asked for directions to IKEA, for example, scroll down to find it again. You won’t need to save these locations as Favourites.
5 See the changes
The public transport option is handy, because, in addition to each option, it makes it clear how many changes are involved. Here we’re looking at three different buses and a subway ride. We’ll give this journey a miss…
8 Choose your adventure
Tap on a public transport hub in the map view and it’ll give you details of which services are running. Tap one to see the next departures – so, for example, National Rail will take you to live train departure information.
3 Know when to go
Maps integrates with services such as Yelp and TripAdvisor, which means it knows when places are open and closed – this can be handy if you need food in a hurry or want to make it to a shop before it shuts.
6 Find specific things
You don’t always need to search for street names or postcodes in your Watch’s Search field – you can do category searches too. Here, we’ve searched for nearby restaurants. The star rating is based on user reviews.
9 Edit your alerts
If like us you’d rather your Watch didn’t vibrate with directional alerts when you’re driving, you can disable that alert in the iPhone Watch app. You can also turn off other alerts for different modes of transport.
