HOW TO Use PDF functions and features
1 Print from apps
If an app can print, it can create a PDF. Here’s a Wikipedia article about Apple in Safari. Tap the Share icon to the right of the Safari address bar, then tap the Print option from the menu that appears.
2 Hidden print functions
It is not obvious, but printing is a way to access PDF functions. With no printer selected, tap Print in the topright corner. We will print all 85 pages of this article.
3 Save to Files
There is no printer selected, so it cannot print. Instead, this menu appears and one of the options is ‘Save to Files’ (iCloud Drive). Tap it to save the whole 85-page article.
4 PDF thumbnails
Choose a folder to save the PDF document to. We selected Downloads, but it could be saved to Documents. The PDF file of the Wikipedia article is in the top-left corner.
5 View PDF files
Whether you’ve created a PDF on the iPad or elsewhere, tap it in the Files app to open it for reading. Tap the Share button in the top-right corner and then tap Lock PDF.
6 Lock with password
PDF documents on iCloud are pretty secure, but if you want to move it elsewhere and it contains sensitive information, enter a password to lock unauthorised people out.
7 Access page functions
Select a page in the PDF in the sidebar. The thumbnail now has a ‘…’ icon. Tap it for page functions like Rotate Left or Rotate Right, Insert Blank Page, Scan Pages and Delete.
8 Highlight and annotate
Tap and hold on a word in the PDF to select it, then drag the selection bars. You can now tap Highlight in the editing bar that appears and choose a highlight colour or note box.
9 Split PDF documents
Tap the Share icon and tap Print. We’re going to split this PDF file by setting the range to Pages 1-40. Tap Print > ‘Save to Files’ as a PDF. Then repeat for pages 41-85.
