QuickKey is a text expansion app that aims to go beyond macOS’s built-in tools. TextExpander is usually our go-to for this, but not everyone loves its new subscription system. With QuickKey, you press a keyboard shortcut, type in your text shortcut, and the snippet automatically pastes into your document (provided you have an extension installed, which the app helps with). Snippets are added via a dedicated manager, and sync over iCloud. They can only be plain text, so you can’t include characters for complex equations or similar. All of which makes it actually not a lot better than the Mac’s built-in tools. It’s easier to enter and edit multi-line snippets, but you can actually enter these in macOS’s seemingly single-line tool by pasting them in. And QuickKey is more awkward to trigger because you have to press a shortcut in the first place.

THE BOTTOM LINE. A fine app, but doesn’t do enough for us to get excited.
