CustomMenu 3 takes a similar approach to the Default Folder X utility, adding a global menu that can be customized for quick access to favorite applications, files, and folders. Just create groups from the Customize Menu window, then add your desired items. Click on the CM menu bar icon and groups and items appear as a cascading menu used to navigate, preview, or open files with a single click. CustomMenu 3 offers two submenus for recent items and a switcher for hopping between running applications. Hovering on a file displays a preview as well as basic info (file type, size, and date created/modified); users also have the option to open files with applications other than the default, or reveal files in the Finder.

One feature we’d like to see is the ability to customize folder names – if you have multiple folders with the same name on different volumes, there’s no easy way to differentiate between them.

THE BOTTOM LINE. An affordable alternative to Default Folder X.
