Checkie! – Visual checklist

A somewhat surreal aide-mémoire

The idea’s in the name here: use pictures instead of words to create a checklist of things to remember for a trip. Open Checkie, name your alarm, then choose a cute animal character for your reminder. Days of the week are at the top, with time underneath. Objects appear at the bottom: scroll through and drag and drop them on your character.

The majority are easy to figure out: a hat is a hat. But the blue folded icon – is this a book, magazine, or newspaper? This can be interpreted to your liking, of course, but we’re baffled by the red flower with a white rectangle…

Adding an object is easy, although you do need to make sure there’s enough space on the screen to keep adding things or the item simply disappears when you try to drop it.

Once you’ve set the time for the alarm and the objects you want to bring with you, set the day(s) you want the alarm to go off and press the check mark. A preview of your character enables you to make further changes before you confirm. You can then tap each item to gray it out as you put it in your bag.

The characters blink, and ears twitch, so there’s a feeling of character, but it’s somewhat confusing in terms of audience. The animals are very cute and kid-friendly, but then not every six-yearold has their own iOS device.

the bottom line. Drag, drop, forget until you get your reminder. A wider choice of icons would have been preferable, though.
