Messages are usually sorted in reverse chronological order; click the “Sort by” menu at the top left of the list to change this. Alternatively, click the filter button (top right), then the filter’s description left of that to see only messages from VIPs, for example.

Open a message and put the pointer over the separating line between its body and the sender’s info above it to reveal some icons; click the paper clip button to save, open or preview the message’s attachments.

Click a contact’s name at the top of a message and choose Add to VIPs; their messages then also appear in the VIPs mailbox. Set “New message notifications” in Mail’s General prefs to VIPs to filter out other interruptions.
