Exxon Mobil Speedpass+

On a road to nowhere, sadly

If you’ve been waiting for the day when filling up the gas tank or washing the car can finally be done from an Apple Watch, look no further than the latest update to Exxon Mobil Speedpass+. With just a few taps on your wrist, you can select a pump and authorize payment without removing your iPhone from your pocket or purse.

That’s the idea, anyway — we didn’t have much luck getting the app to work at all on our first-generation Apple Watch, despite being otherwise logged in to the iPhone app, and with a valid credit card tied to the same account. Removing and reinstalling the Watch app didn’t seem to help either.

Unfortunately, the other problem is that not every Exxon Mobil location supports Speedpass+, so not even the iPhone app will work everywhere. What does work consistently is the Speedpass keytag, so keep one on your keychain as a fallback for now.

the bottom line. A promising but flawed cashless payment app for frequent travelers.
