> Intel patches exploit

Last issue we reported on new Spectre-like vulnerabilities found in Intel chips. Intel has released beta patches to tackle the “Variant 4” exploit. It rates this “moderate” because it says several issues it causes are already addressed by January’s patches for the original Spectre and Meltdown flaws. Best advice: install Apple updates and security patches when they appear.

> Steam gaming for iOS ?

In May Apple rejected Valve’s Steam Link app for iOS, saying it violated guidelines about in-app purchases. Steam Link uses Valve’s In-Home Streaming functionality to stream gameplay video from a Mac or PC to an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV on the same network. Valve is trying again with a revised app with no purchase option in it. If this app is approved, it promises to enable you to use iOS devices, or an Apple TV connected to a big screen, to play Steam games installed on your Mac or PC using a Steam Controller or Made for iPhone controllers.

> No more lightning?

Apple could replace the proprietary Lightning connector in its 2019 iPhone and iPad releases — or so a supply chain reported cited by DigiTimes claims. The rumored replacement is not microUSB but USB Type-C, as used in MacBooks and a number of Android phones, because USB-C supports fastcharging. However, there were similar rumors before the launch of the iPhone 8 and iPhone X — both of which still use Lightning.
