THE GEAR WE’RE LUSTING AFTER
The gear we’re lusting after this month.
1 Nikon COOLPIX P1000 nikonusa.com $999
>>> Bridge cameras have suffered recently due to a lack of flexibility compared to smaller, interchangeable lens cameras. So, Nikon said; “what if we have one the most insanely flexible lenses imaginable?” It has a ludicrous 125x zoom lens built in. That’s telescope–like. In fact, it’s so telescope–like, it has a dedicated mode for shooting the moon (and one for bird shots at full extension). You can capture 16MP still images, or 4K video, and advanced image stabilization will keep it as steady as possible (you’ll still need a tripod at full stretch).
2 ColorWare AirPods colorware.com $299
>>> AirPods have become a smash hit — you can’t go anywhere without seeing throngs of people with the telltale white sticks poking down from their ears. But it’s starting to look a bit like a Samsung ad making fun of Apple users for being a cult… so grab some AirPods from ColorWare instead, who’ll finish them in any color you like, in metallic or plain. They do that case (Right) too, so you can have everything matching, or a different color for all three — whatever you like. They cost a bunch more than regular AirPods, but what’s a price for individuality?
3 Expressive Touché expressivee.com $399
>>> This electronic music ‘instrument’ doesn’t create music on its own, but instead gives you cool and intuitive new ways to control synthesizers, whether that’s a keyboard–based one, or on your Mac. It’s made using a hardwood top on a pressure–detecting sensor — push it in different ways to change your sound, as it’s playing, with the slightest brush affecting things differently to a hard press (and everything in between). It all happens live, and you control how it changes the sound through its software, so you can get really experimental.
4 Bowers & Wilkins 800 Series Diamond bowers-wilkins.com From $3,500 (per speaker)
>>> The 800 Series Diamond range from Bowers & Wilkins is already one of the most desirable sets of loudspeakers in the world. The unique headpiece is made from solid aluminum, and keeps the tweeter and Continuum midrange drive free from any sound interference from the cabinet. The Prestige Edition comes in a santos rosewood finish that takes around four weeks to complete per unit — the beautiful wood is finely cut and built, then has 13 coats of lacquer applied to ensure the glossiest look that brings out its stunning natural color. Now that’s luxury audio.
