LETTER OF THE MONTH

-

I’m disappointed that Apple is leaving the networking business. I recently moved into a larger house and bought an Amplifi setup to help out. Wi–Fi always showed a good signal everywhere, but devices were constantly disconnecting or had slow internet performance. I spent a lot of time with tech support, but alas — finally I gave up. Then, I brought out the ol’ Time Capsule and purchased two Airport Express Base Stations to extend the network. Well, data transfer speeds jumped from 5–7Mbps on my Mac in the office to 70Mbps. Hopefully this stuff will last! Robert DeStasio We’ve always seen good results from the mesh networks we’ve tested, though more lag is inevitable when using one — coverage increase in a big home is the real boon. Issue 142 of Mac|Life highlighted the best of these, though we didn’t have the Amplifi to test at the time. Luckily, Airport Express support will continue for the next five years, so we wouldn’t be concerned if this was your chosen route for networking in the home.
