Tip calculator apps were plentiful during the lucrative developer gold rush after Apple debuted the App Store in 2008, but as time has gone by, they seem to be dwindling. Worse yet, the quality of these apps has declined over the years, which is why we’re still rocking a longtime iPhone favorite, Bowtie, no longer available.

The time may have finally come to retire that orphaned app at long last, thanks to Tipsy. This one is all about WatchOS though — open the app on iPhone and you’re greeted with the message, “Enjoy Tipsy on your Apple Watch” and nothing more.

Unlike other tip calculators we’ve tried on Apple Watch, Tipsy gets almost all of the little details right. The interface is laid out in a way that makes sense, without losing power user features like the ability to split a check up to four ways, or optionally round up a tip by total or to the nearest dollar amount.

Tipsy even thoughtfully clears the previous entry 15 minutes after the app was last used, automatically presenting the keypad on next launch, ready for your next great dining adventure. There’s really only one thing keeping the app from perfection, and that’s how Tipsy handles percentage calculation.

If you’re a cheapskate like us, tips in the 10 to 15 percent range are commonplace. Unfortunately, Tipsy is built with waiters and waitresses in mind, offering only options for 10, 15, 18, 20, or 25 percent, offering no way to dial up to custom increments sitting in between. Perhaps this decision will make us more generous in the future, but for now it’s the only thing stopping Tipsy from being the perfect tip calculator for Apple Watch. the bottom line. Tipsy gets nearly everything right, unless you happen to be a total skinflint.
