Turn an iPad into a second screen for your Mac!

Turn your iOS device into a second Mac display

- Carrie Marshall

$9.99 From Duet, Inc, duetdisplay.com Needs iOS 7 or later, OS X 10.9 or later

If you have an old iPad sitting around, or if your iPad languishes unloved while you’re working, why not make it earn its keep as a second display for your Mac or PC? That’s what Duet Display delivers. Simply connect your iOS device to your computer, install the software on both devices, and you’ve got a second, touch–enabled display with no lag.

It works exceptionally well, and if you’re running on battery power you can reduce the frame rate and image quality to reduce the load on your laptop even further. As with normal displays you can adjust the relative positioning for smooth movement between screens, and you can also use the virtual Touch Bar for quick access.

The core app turns your iPad or iPhone into a second touch–screen display for Mac, adding the virtual Touch Bar. The Pro version, which is solely for the iPad Pro and an extra $19.99 annually on top of the initial $9.99 purchase price, lets you draw using Apple Pencil and has better color processing for more accurate results. A third version, Air, is imminent and will add wireless connections and remote desktop access.

One of the best things about Duet Display is its wide compatibility. The core Duet Display app runs on any computer running OS X 10.9, Windows 7 or later, and it’s compatible with iPhones and iPads running iOS 7 and up. If you want to upgrade to the Pro version you’ll need slightly more recent hardware: OS X 10.9, Windows 8 and an iPad Pro running iOS 9 or later. That being said, the imminent Duet Air release requires OS X 10.10 and iOS 9.

the bottom line. A great way to make use of a spare iPad, and get some extra space in the process.
