> Weather warning

at 7am each morning, when my scheduled do not disturb period ends, my iphone displays the current time and weather. however, it’s the weather for somewhere else — for example, showing a warm day when it’s snowing here. why is that? When your iPhone exits this period without any interaction from you, it’s immediately trying to display current weather conditions, supplied by the Weather app. The reason they’re inappropriate is that the app isn’t able to access your location, so it supplies information for somewhere quite different instead.

That often happens when you’ve set the Weather app to be given access to location data only while you’re using it — as in, it’s on the screen. When the app first starts up, or posts information like this to the screen, it’s more likely that it won’t be able to get location information in time to know where you are, and it may fetch data for a seemingly arbitrary and incorrect location instead. Developers tend to select places such as New York City, where there are plenty of users.

The solution is to go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services, find and tap Weather, then set it to always have access to your location. There may still be occasions when the required location info isn’t available in time for the app to override its defaults, but outlandish weather conditions should be less frequent.

There shouldn’t be any significant disadvantages to giving the Weather app access to your location data in this way.

?? ?? Apps with location–dependent updates on the Lock screen should be set to Always in Settings > Privacy > Location Services.
