Day One 4 is an update to the popular journaling app for iOS. It differs from other note–taking and calendar apps in that it focuses on capturing thoughts and activity for posterity, rather than to help you work or complete tasks.

The headline new feature in version 4 is video. Day One has long allowed you to add photos and audio clips to your journals, but now premium users ($2.92 per month) can add video clips too. Currently, support is limited to importing clips up to three minutes long at 1080p resolution. So if you have clips longer than that, you’ll need to trim them. That limitation feels reasonable in a journaling app. The 1080p limitation, however, while understandable, may create more of a problem given that modern iPhones capture video at 4K resolution by default. You can change the resolution to 1080p in Settings, or re–scale existing video in another app, but it’s not really ideal. Videos can be added either from the in–app media picker or from a Share extension in Photos.

Version 4 also added integration with the Health app — counting mindfulness minutes while you update your journal. And it adds Streaks — days in a row with an entry — to the timeline. Version 4.1 adds MP3 and WAV support for embedded audio.

Day One is a great way to create and keep journals, and its new video support adds to its appeal. THE BOTTOM LINE. Video support is limited but a worthwhile addition to a terrific app.
