> 5G iPhone?

-

If you’re hankering after a 5G iPhone, you’re not alone, but it looks like you’ll have to wait a while longer — as long as September 2020 if the rumors circulating on the internet are true.

That’s perhaps not surprising. It’s still very early days for 5G and Apple clearly wants to get it right rather than rush in headfirst. There’s another reason: it also wants to own the components, the intellectual property and the expertise it needs to include 5G in future devices — hence its $1 billion acquisition in July of the “majority” of Intel’s modem business.

But the prospect of a 5G iPhone in 2020 isn’t the only reason to get excited. Next year’s models are also rumored to feature oLED displays, a much–improved camera system and a tinier “notch”, thanks to improvements in the sensors Apple uses for Face ID.

The iPhone and 2020 iPad are also likely to get a power and battery life boost from the new 5nm processors that Apple supplier TSMC has developed. And there’s even a rumor that Touch ID might return, only this time it will be embedded within the display rather than being housed separately in a Home button.

In the meantime, there are other ways to experience 5G speeds on your Apple devices — although at the moment it’s not an on–the–go option; you’ll need to be at home or in the office to get it. At the present time, verizon will rent you a hub that connects to your devices via Wi-Fi – and no doubt the other networks will follow suit once their 5G rollouts begin.

The one thing you can’t do, yet, is team your MacBook or iPad with a 5G dongle for use on the move – none of the 5G networks in the US sell them, although we don’t think it’ll be too long
