Wunderlist lives on in To Do

-

Free From Microsoft, microsoft.com made for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch needs iOS 11 or later

When Wunderlist, one of the most popular to–do list apps on the Mac and iOS, ceased development, it was acquired by Microsoft and re–emerged as To Do. And its heritage is obvious to anyone who used Wunderlist from the second you launch it.

Now at version 2, the layout and organization of lists and tasks in To Do is immediately familiar, and that’s no bad thing. And it’s just as aesthetically pleasing, with the option to choose from a selection of images to use as backgrounds to lists. There are a limited number to choose from, but they all look great, and you can use a different one for each list. We’d love to be able to use our own images, though. As before, you can schedule tasks, view those due today in a special list called My Day, and share lists with, as well as

assign tasks to, others.

Like Wunderlist, syncing is lightning quick. And, crucially, once you’ve signed in to or created a Microsoft account and started using

To Do, you can import your Wunderlist lists just by entering your Wunderlist account details.

New in version 2 are those background images we mentioned previously, as well as the option to choose colored backgrounds. And there’s also Dark mode support for iOS 13 or iPad OS. You can even sync tasks with Outlook.

Despite now being in its second version under Microsoft’s stewardship, there are a few things missing in To Do. There’s no support for Siri Shortcuts, for example. And while there is a Share sheet in To Do to allow you to share tasks with other apps, there’s no share extension to allow you to share from those other apps to To Do.

You can add attachments, including images, to tasks, but images don’t display a preview, which is a shame. There’s also the option to watch videos in the app.

There’s much to like here, such as the light bulb in My Day which, when you tap it, suggests tasks to focus on. But there are omissions too, such as

the need to manually add tasks to My Day, instead of all tasks scheduled for the current day being automatically added.

the bottom line. Fans of Wunderlist will like To Do a lot. And if you use Outlook, the integration is useful. For the rest of us, Reminders is smarter and better integrated with other apps. Kenny hemphill
