A Color Story is an iOS app that’s very much designed to appeal to the Instagram generation, even touting filters designed by “influencers” and with grid planning to preview how your images before uploading.

Free to download, most of its essential image editing tools are available from the get–go, with additional filter packs available as IAPs ranging from $0.99 to $3.99. There’s also an annual subscription available.

We last looked at A Color Story at version 2.0, so what does the latest — version 4.0 — bring? There’s a simplified

user interface which looks good, even if the all–white scheme can make navigation a little vague at times. Also new are Touch Tools, which work like masks with user–definable brush sizes, allowing you to selectively apply light and color changes to specific areas of the image. This can often be preferable to changing the whole image at once.

Some of the app’s free filters and effects are good too, and the updated Style Pack contains some pleasing looks that can be applied with a couple of taps. IAPs are available and updated on an ongoing basis and these range from subtle looks to slightly garish light leaks.

Also new in version 4.0 is the ability to save “steps”, essentially storing every edit you made as a user preset.

The app is still a little too aggressive in pushing purchase messages at you, mind.

THE BOTTOM LINE. An effective tool for Instagrammers to create and curate a look for their content.
