GIFs are used extensively across mobile messaging platforms, but there are relatively few tools to let you easily create your own. Giftr for iOS is dedicated to just that. It’s free, with the “pro” features (mostly filters and stickers) available for a monthly, yearly or one–off payment of $5.99, $19.99, or $39.99 respectively. The app uses AI to scan your photo library and identify groups of pictures that would suit the GIF treatment — typically this means several shots of the same person, item, or place.
You can go with Giftr’s image selection or create your own from your library,
manually re–ordering, removing, or adding frames as you go. You can also control playback speed and behavior, and use the extensive controls to change colors, appearance, geometry, and more. You can add and customize stickers, text and other overlays, then export as a GIF, video, live photo or to any connected social media account. It’s easy to get to grips with and feels quite Instagram–like.
Giftr works well and feels slick and fun, and if you like making GIFs, it’s a great way to do it. You’d probably have to want to make a fair few to justify the full unlock price, which seems a lot for a tool most people might play with for a while but then perhaps lose interest in. That said, the core features are all available in the free version so you can always try before you buy.
THE BOTTOM LINE. A great tool for making and sharing your own GIFs, even if that may be a niche proposition for many people.
