PUT YOUR FAVORITES ON THE MAP

-

APPLE MAPS HAS had a revamp in macOS Catalina and especially in iOS 13, which supports the new Look Around feature, similar to Google Street View. This appears as an icon showing a pair of binoculars for places where it’s available, so far mainly in California. But other mapping is in progress, as you can see at bit.ly/mal167_map.

When you start navigating in Maps, you’ll now see a Share ETA (estimated time of arrival) link at the bottom of the screen. It disappears after a few seconds, but it’s among the options shown when you tap the grey bar displayed above the journey time. (It would be ideal if you could ask Siri to share your ETA, but it doesn’t seem to understand this yet.) Pick a contact to tell them when and where you’ll be arriving. You can even set people to be notified automatically whenever you start navigating to a certain place, maybe to let someone know you’re on the way home. This uses the new Favorites feature, which appears below the search bar in Maps’ default view. Tap an existing Favorite, or tap the “+” sign to add one, then tap Add Person under Share ETA in its Details sheet.

FAVORITES AND COLLECTIONS

You can access Favorites in macOS Catalina’s Maps app, too. Click in the Search box at the top (you may first need to click on the map below or press Tab or Esc) and click Favorites to drop down a sheet listing your favorited locations. To add a Favorite, click a marked place (or Ctrl–click and drop a pin to create one), click the “i” icon and click the heart at the top right.

Favorites sync via iCloud, as do Collections, another feature that hasn’t yet made it to macOS. In iOS 13, drag the gray bar above the Search box upwards (don’t tap the Search box) to reveal the New Collection button. Tap this and enter a name for your collection; you can also add a picture from your Camera Roll. Tap Done at the bottom right, then Create at the top– right (let’s be honest, this interface needs more work). When you tap a location to bring up its card, you can slide it up and tap Add to, then pick a collection.
