THE IPHONE 11’S dual camera system means its capable of taking stunning 4K video footage. The videos it produces are crisp and clear, yet it almost seems that the better digital cameras get the less atmosphere they seem to be able to capture in videos. It was the imperfections of old film techniques that gave them their characteristic appeal. Grainy–quality film and burns between cut scenes can transform a boring shot into something that looks truly special. And because that old fashioned movie– reel look is still very much in demand, we thought we would show you an easy way to achieve it on your Mac using Premiere Pro.

OVERLAYING VIDEO CLIPS

Previously, we have shown you how to edit video in Adobe Premiere Elements 2020, but to age a film convincingly you need to learn the technique of overlaying one clip over the top of another. To do that you’ll need to upgrade to its more advanced cousin, Premiere Pro, which comes as part of Adobe’s Creative Cloud. Luckily, there’s a 30–day trial available at adobe.com.

Premiere Pro has many more options available than Premiere Elements 2020. In this tutorial, we’ll first overlay some grainy film and then add in some film burns at various transition points to give the video a really authentic look. The result is effective and shows how easy it can be to create quite striking effects if you know just a few simple editing tips and tricks.

The resources we use in this tutorial can be downloaded for free by visiting the websites mentioned in the text.
