Use an old iPhone as a home security camera

Save your cash while protecting your home

-

WITH GOOD LENSES and plentiful storage, old iPhones make great home security cams. Firstly, you’ll want a stand for your iPhone. Ideally it will be a charging stand to keep it juiced up, but you could use an ordinary stand and plug in a cable. You might want to disguise your phone in some way, perhaps behind other objects, so it’s not immediately obvious to an intruder. Finally, a wide–angle lens attachment is a good way to enlarge the field of view and ensure more coverage. Next, you will need a recording app. Alfred Home Security Camera is a good choice — it offers motion detection, a siren, a low– light filter, and more. Download the app on your current iPhone and create an account, then do the same on your old phone and log in to the same account. Then set your current phone as the Viewer and the old device as the Camera.

With Alfred you can create a Trust Circle of people in your home to prevent the app from alerting you if your housemate passes in front of the camera, for example. And the premium version includes higher– resolution recording, AI–powered person detection, more cloud storage, and a few other features.
