Not everyone is a fan of iMovie’s workflow and some people prefer a more conventional linear video editor, or need some more professional features than iMovie has. Premiere Elements has the advantage of being based on the technology from Premiere, Adobe’s long–established video package that is used at a professional level. Features from that more expensive version find their way into the much more affordable Elements but unlike its larger sibling it’s a one–off purchase.
One such feature is Adobe’s Sensei AI technology that Premiere uses to power its automated editing. This takes several forms including automatic reframing of clips, matching music length to clip length and Smart Trim, which selects the best clips from your media pool. It can also analyze location and content info from your library of videos and still images to group events, people and locations together. Of course you can ignore all the automated stuff and edit manually if you prefer, or use a combination of the two.
EASY AND EFFECTIVE
Adobe has included some cool effects, such as animated overlays, double exposures and color and exposure adjustment that you can use to polish your footage. You can add animated elements including animating skies within your content, create time–lapse videos and create Instagram–style effects like freeze frames and titles.
It’s designed to make everything as easy as possible so you can mix and
match footage from different devices like smartphones, video cameras or SLRs, and Premiere Elements will automatically conform it to work inside the project that you are working on.
Once your edit is done, it provides options not only to output high–quality movies straight to your Mac but also compressed versions, with variable settings, to output to social media.
Premiere Elements is a great way to step your movie making up to the next level, incorporating AI tech and easy–to–use effects, overlays and animation, as well as having a focus on social media as an end target for your productions. It’s very different to iMovie — maybe even more “pro” — and accessible for the reasonable one–off price.
