HOW TO Get started with web apps
Add to Dock
Launch a web page in Safari and, if you decide that you would like to turn it into a web app, either click the Share button in the toolbar and choose “Add to Dock”, or click the menu bar and select File > “Add to Dock”.
If you’re already signed in when using the web page in Safari, you’ll be automatically logged into the web app. If not, when signing in via the web app using a password or a passkey, indicate that you want to remain signed in.
Alter permissions
Simply go down the list of options and select the relevant permission, whether that be Camera, Microphone, Location Services or Screen Sharing (the latter is under General > Sharing) toggling the switches on or off.
Change the name
Safari will suggest a name for the web app, using the title given to the original web page by developers. In some cases, it can be overlong, clumsy or non–descriptive but, if you’re unhappy for any reason, you can change it. Select Add.
Show navigation
Web apps will autofill your details from iCloud Keychain. Now let’s play around. Click the web app’s name in the menu bar and select Settings. Tick Show Navigation Controls to see the Forward, Back and Share buttons.
Manage notifications
If the web app has notifications (such as www.tomsguide.com in our example), then you can go to Apple menu > System Settings > Notifications to decide how and where they should show and whether they can make a sound.
Launch the app
The web app will instantly find a place in the Dock. Since it’s saved to your Applications folder, it will also be available from Launchpad and you can search for it via Spotlight. Select your new web app to open it.
Check for privacy
System prompts may ask you for permission to use the camera or mic. You may have allowed screen sharing or location access too. Manage these by selecting the Privacy tab and choosing Privacy & Security Settings.
Use a Focus mode
Web apps can also be included or excluded from Focus modes. Go to Apple menu > System Settings > Focus. Select Add Focus and when setting up, select Allowed Apps and Add. You can now pick a web app to silence or allow.
