Work out with Fitness+

Access more than 4,000 workouts and meditations

FITNESS+ HAS BEEN around since December 2020, offering a wide range of video workouts featuring top fitness professionals. Available for the iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, it’s akin to having a stack of fitness DVDs to hand without needing to take up loads of living space (or indeed a DVD player!). The big difference is that Fitness+ incorporates workout metrics from your Apple Watch so, as well as following on–screen guides and routines, you can see how your body is performing.

METRICS AND MOTIVATION Before we take a closer look, it’s worth pointing out that this service doesn’t come for free — long–term at least. You can sometimes grab a free trial (usually when you buy a new device) but, in general, you’re going to be paying $9.99/ month or $79.99 annually (unless you subscribe to Apple One Premier at $37.95/month, in which case it’s included). Even so, it’s a relatively low price when compared to some competitors or a personal trainer. You can also share a subscription with up to five family members.

So what do you get? Fitness+ has multiple workout categories so you can choose the type of exercise you’d like to try. You can then choose a program to follow, many of which won’t require you to have a ton of equipment to complete.

As you work through, you’ll be able to see your heart rate and how many calories you are burning. Trainers may ask you to check various metrics while you exercise and there are ways to help keep you motivated, with rewards for closing an Activity ring, to the Burn Bar which compares your workout to that of other users.

To keep things fresh, Fitness+ recommends workouts you may enjoy, and new content is dropped weekly (one addition for 2024 is a Strength, Core and Yoga for Golfers program). The service is also mindful of beginners, which is why you’ll see videos aimed at easing you in to your new fitness goals, making things simpler or reducing the time you need to be active. Throw in deep integration with Apple Music, and you’ll discover Fitness+ seldom feels like a chore.
