Tasmania’s hop-growing industry had been centralised at Bushy Park for several decades at the time this photo was taken, but even back in the war years when hops were being grown throughout the state, the Derwent Valley was providing about 80 per cent of the Tasmanian crop. The
Mercury visited three hop farms at Bushy Park at the start of March 1942, producing a page of pictures showing the harvest under way, including the young woman above. Today, Bushy Park produces the lion’s share of that most essential ingredient for beer.
