FIRST PERSON

JACK LARK MUSICAL THEATRE DIRECTOR

-

I was happiest when ... I visited New York with my best friend two years ago. It has so much charm and character, plus it’s heaven on earth for musical theatre tragics. You wouldn’t know it but ... I don’t like spaghetti bolognese, but I’ll happily eat a tray of lasagne. My most embarrassing moment ... I was recently out for dinner and a few people came over and started chatting. I started talking to the person who was closest to my age and asked him what he did. He said he played cricket and, thinking it would be a local team, I asked “who for?” He said: “Oh, I play for Australia”. He handled it very well ... The last time I cried was ... watching the film Interstellar ... it gets me every time. The last book I read was ... The Locksmith’s Daughter by local author Karen Brooks – now that’s a good read. My favourite films are ... Arrival, The Godfather series, The Lord Of The Rings, Up, and The Great Beauty. I really want to ... direct a musical on Broadway. That’s big picture though. My guilty pleasure is ... I absolutely adore the film The Devil Wears Prada. Life has taught me ... I’m only 20, so I’m not going to be giving any advice that is too hardcore, but I guess I always try to approach obstacles with calm and level judgment. I’m about to ... put up my first ever musical as co-director, called The Theory Of Relativity. It focuses on the lives of 12 college-aged students who affect each other without knowing it. My first job was ... working for my parents’ distillery [Lark Distillery] putting labels on bottles in the school holidays. What I enjoy most about my work is … making people happy. I fell in love with making film and theatre because it can really affect how an audience thinks.
