WORLD FAMOUS NUTTERY

-

A world-famous garden featuring hazelnuts is Sissinghurst Castle Garden in Kent in England. It was created by Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson now owned by the National Trust. The famous literary couple bought the ruined castle in 1930. Indeed, in Harold’s diary, he wrote that it was the nutwalk at Sissinghurst that clinched their desire to own the property: “We came suddenly upon the nutwalk,” he wrote, “and that settled it.”

That Nutwalk is now regularly pruned, tended and underplanted with shade-loving trilliums (Trillium spp. and Cultvars). It is a long and beautiful rectangular space with elegant, multi-stemmed hazelnuts bisected with long straight paths. The hazelnut variety grown at Sissinghurst is the one that I have in my garden — the old-fashioned “Kentish Cob” — with small, slightly flattened nuts. The pruned branches are used as plant supports elsewhere in the Sissinghurst garden.

In spring, when the trilliums are flowering and the hazelnuts are in new, bright green leaf, The Nuttery is my favourite part of this superb garden. Trilliums are woodland perennials with curious three-petalled flowers held above three green sepals and three large leaves. The flowers are white, yellow or brownish red and, for gardeners who like the rare and unusual, they are highly collectable.
