TASMO GENIUS

- WORDS TIM MARTAIN PHOTOGRAPHY NIKKI DAVIS-JONES

Hobart illustrator Suzanne White has turned her love of Tasmania into a vibrant set of stickers that people can use in their iPhone photos and text messages.

Called Tasmojis, the bright and playful stickers feature static and animated images of Tasmanian icons such as Hobart, kunanyi, Port Arthur, Devonport, Launceston, Tasmanian devils, and thylacines.

An illustrator and cartoonist whose work has appeared in newspapers, magazines and children’s television, White says she is constantly drawing and she was looking for a way to put some of her more incidental drawings to some use.

“I always had all these little drawings about Tassie, silly ones sometimes, and I was wondering what I could do with them, so this was kind of an experiment to see what would happen.

“They started out as a bunch of cartoons I’d drawn previously by hand and I’d been sending them to friends and I figured if I wanted to send them to people, maybe others would as well.

“Then I hit on the iPhone stickers idea and thought, ‘Yeah, I reckon I could do that.’ I’ve done plenty of work on the digital side of things but I’m not a programmer or an app developer, so it was a bit of a challenge!”

White says the app has proved quite popular on the Apple App Store and is already considering creating another set for another city. She is also developing an Android version of the app.

Simply search for Tasmoji in the App Store, the app sells for $1.49.
