EASY RIDER

- WORDS TRACY RENKIN PICTURE LUKE BOWDEN

It’s dusk on a Thursday evening and Hudson Maumill is balancing on a unicycle along the pathway at Long Beach at Little Sandy Bay.

He’s just cycled past the threedeep steps that lead into the water around the bend from the barbecues and his one wheel rolls just inches away from the edge.

The 10-year-old adventurer, who has just finished cubs, puts his arms out like a bird to help him balance, and propels himself to the metal fence.

But when he gets to the railing he doesn’t reach over to touch it.

He just sails past, over the metal bumps of a boat ramp and disappears around the headland.

His dad Mark is walking about 50m behind him. “He got it last Christmas, and it’s such a beautiful night he was super keen to get out and practice,” he said.

The Grade 4 student from Bonnet Hill caught the unicycle bug after doing a circus workshop with Circus Art Tasmania two years ago.

“I love going quite fast and turning at the same time,” Hudson says. “It’s really fun to ride.”

He’s also got an unofficial world record for his age for the biggest amount of pogo stick jumps in one go.

It was a few years ago now and nobody recorded it, but he was chuffed at the time.

“I didn’t actually have my own pogo stick at first,” Hudson says. “So I had to sneak my sister’s stick when she wasn’t around.”

“I jumped 12,651 times, and it was so much that I got cuts on my legs, but I just kept going.”

He’s hoping this Christmas there may be stilts or an electric scooter under the Christmas tree.
