triple brick walls and an exposed brick feature above the old fireplace in the living area.”
An adjacent contemporary open-plan kitchen and dining area features polished Tasmanian oak floorboards, Miele and Liebherr integrated appliances and bi-fold doors onto a balcony that captures the morning sun.
Down a flight of hand-crafted timber stairs is a third bedroom, bathroom and second living area or office with in-built shelving.
It’s a space that provides versatility, Ms How says, with its separate entrance and seamless connectivity with the garden.
Several historic finds were made during the renovations, including the discovery of four tonne of convict-made bricks and locally sourced sandstone, which had been hidden underneath a “door” in the floorboards of the spacious main bedroom and walk-in wardrobe.
Carting the bricks and sandstone out by hand, Ms How has ensured the original connection to the property lives on, having integrated them into the landscaped garden. The door too has been upcycled into a much-loved coffee table.
With no intention of returning to the mainland, how do Ms How’s friends and family feel about her move to Hobart these days?
“They’re always asking if they can come and visit,” she laughs.
“We have lots of visitors. Everyone loves it, I think they might be a little bit envious.”
