Home is where the art is

The next owner of this North Hobart house will become the custodian of a work of art that’s admired by passers-by every day, writes Jarrad Bevan.

IF you approach this home from one direction, you might miss its most bold feature. But from the opposite side, an entire wall is awash with a sunset-like painting of a notable North Hobart character.

Using the building as a canvas, the photorealistic artwork was painted by Australian-born, internationally renowned street artist Smug (Sam Bates).

It was inspired by art the homeowners had seen on their travels and Cameron Williams, a well-known North Hobart resident.

On his Instagram, Smug described Williams as a “local legend” … “who drops knowledge on everyone and carves these beautiful heart brooches for the women of Hobart”.

Smug’s art can be found all over the world, from Australia to Scotland, Sweden, UK, Germany, France, Finland and Ireland.

For agent Bec Owens from Peterswald for property, the mural adds to the appeal of No.56 Tasma St.

“It is a commanding feature of the property,” Mrs Owens said.

“With its backstory and meaning that is linked to the area, it’s a piece of local history.

“Since this piece went up — and there were already a few smaller murals around the suburb — it seems that street art has grown in North Hobart.

“There’s a lot more now on surrounding buildings and cafes.

“It has become part of the look and feel of the area.

“If that appeals to you, and you are looking for that inner-city lifestyle, I think you might be quite proud to have a piece like this one by Smug displayed prominently on the side of your house.”

This 1920s-built terrace has generously proportioned rooms featuring high ceilings, polished boards and a neutral decor, culminating in a calm and modern interior.

The sunny entry courtyard is tucked away from the street behind a high picket fence.

Beyond the central hallway there is a large, versatile room to the left that is currently used as a lounge and music room, but could be a ground floor bedroom.

The hallway opens up to the stairwell and through to the lounge and dining space beyond.

There is a galley kitchen at the rear of the property plus a large laundry and a convenient second toilet.

The private courtyard with decking and a barbecue area is the perfect spot to entertain friends or enjoy a pre-dinner drink before hitting the local restaurants or cafes.

Upstairs, there are two extremely generous bedrooms, with room for king size beds and a sitting area.

The master has a pretty original window overlooking the tree-lined street, while the second bedroom opens to a study or sunroom.

Also on this level is a family bathroom with a shower, vanity and toilet.

The home is priced in the $895,000-plus range. It will be open for inspection today and Saturday contact Bec Owens or Gavin Duhig for details.
