MARRIAGE EQUALITY

READER Peadar MacEoin informs us we can’t pick and choose which biblical accounts to base marriage on but then commits the same error when trying to rubbish these accounts (Letters, July 4). For example, MacEoin states that David and Solomon having hundreds of wives is a fact, but that Jesus’s celibate life was invented by the four evangelists. Unless MacEoin accepts the Bible as historically accurate, he or she is no position to lecture others about what it says.

MacEoin seems to have a reading comprehension problem, saying that Lot had sex with his daughters. Rather, it was the daughters who took him while he was in a drunken sleep. The children they bore gave rise to Moab and Ammon, nations now extinct. MacEoin confuses the recording of an event with approving of that event.

MacEoin’s letter hides that fact that every biblical person and nation which departed from the self-evident reality of one man and one woman in marriage suffered the consequences.

Lastly, MacEoin castigates St Paul for his alleged attitude to women, but fails to consider that it’s really the gay movement which rejects women. The near-naked men who strut their gay pride in Sydney’s mardi gras every year are telling the world that no women will ever be good enough for them. ing high school as a gay person, I honestly didn’t think this insane and cruel attitude would continue into adulthood ... and on such a grand scale. Marriage equality will go ahead in Australia and when it does people will see these ludicrous claims are false and that life will continue as normal as it has done so in every other country where marriage equality has prevailed.

All about democracy

THE same-sex marriage debate is on the borderline of dictatorship. This issue should be put to a referendum and allow the people to vote and make a decision on the outcome, rather than politicians and journalists. definition of marriage (“Archbishop in marriage-law defence video”, Mercury, July 9). The booklet, Don’t Mess with Marriage, is 1950s dribble and many parents are now re-assessing their child’s enrolment. The booklet is hypocritical. In the first page it states same-sex attraction must be treated with respect, sensitivity and love — that’s until marriage is mentioned.

The Catholic Church has no idea on marriage. It denies its priests and nuns the right to marry. While preaching evil discrimination over same-sex marriage, they fail to mention for hundreds of years the Church has been responsible for some of the worst atrocities in world history. Then, more recently, the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has uncovered decades of priests sexually abusing the very students they were trusted to educate and protect.

The booklet and the letter show how out of touch the Catholic Church still is and the Catholic Education Office should concentrate on the curriculum rather than circulating these unwanted views.

Please explain

IN the debate over marriage equality, we keep hearing the argument that children need both a mother and a father. Silly me, I thought children needed a loving, supportive and stable family. I didn’t realise that their happiness was so dependent on their parents’ genitalia. Can someone please explain this?

Never happen

INTERESTING that Mr Hodgman says that discussions about Tasmania hosting refugees at Pontville had reached a “high level”. My own high level sources say that it will never happen.

A laugh

SENATOR Jacqui Lambie may think she is comedy gold. Unfortunately though, for Jacqui Lambie, each ludicrous comment she makes such as those directed at the Tasmanian Greens and conservationists alike are just more nails in her political coffin. Keep up the not so great entertainment Senator Lambie, it works for me!

Beware profiteering

IF you plan on taking outside food, especially non-alcoholic drinks, into Blundstone Arena, don’t bother. The helpful bag-check people will tell you “this item is not permitted in the ground, throw it away”. But lo and behold, you will find that exact item in the ground for sale at an inflated price. I didn’t buy a new bottle of 750ml Pump water, or any of the alternatives. Beware the profiteering antics if you go to the football in Hobart.

Life a gamble

TOURISTS are here in record numbers. Come on Tasmanians, let’s make their stay more enjoyable and think of a way to make your pockets healthier too. We have all got a bit of David Walsh in us. Life is one big gamble.
