Gibbs back but baffled
CARLTON sought clarification this week from the AFL after Port Adelaide’s Jay Schulz escaped suspension for a tackle similar to the one that cost Bryce Gibbs a two-week suspension.
Gibbs was last night named among the Blues’ returning for tonight’s clash with Richmond, but coach John Barker said the club was still mystified.
“Look, we were really clear after ‘Gibba’ was given his suspension as to what the issues are and foundations are with that sort of tackle and then when the decision comes on the weekend . . . ” Barker said yesterday.
“We’ve sought clarification, we’re still confused.
“It will take a better man than me to coach the discrepancy between those two tackles.
“[It was] really disappointing for Bryce, really disappointing.
“Clarification is massive in football regardless of what part you’re in – coaching or playing – you need clarity on what you can and can’t do.
“[The AFL] are working through the situation as best they can given the scenario that’s occurred.”
The Carlton vice-captain became engaged in some Twitter banter with Port Adelaide’s Sam Colquhoun over the legitimacy of his tackle, but he will inject valuable experience to a young Blues side tonight.
“As we sit there’s going to be between seven and nine guys who have less than 50 games experience tomorrow night, which is really exciting for us because we know a fair bulk of them are going to provide us with our future,” Barker said.
Young forward Troy Menzel is also in for the Blues, who have handed long-kicking rookie Tom Fields his AFL debut.
Richmond has brought back ruckman Shaun Hampson to face his old side in the absence of the suspended Ivan Maric.
Geelong has regained Jimmy Bartel and James Kelly for tomorrow’s pivotal AFL clash with North Melbourne, while the Roos have axed goalsneak Lind- say Thomas. Bartel will play his first game since Round 3 after overcoming a knee injury and Kelly returns from an ankle injury suffered in Round 11.
They are joined by ruckman Dawson Simpson, with the Cats making three unforced changes.
Thomas departs the Roos along with Lachie Hansen (hip), Majak Daw (omitted) and Trent Dumont (omitted) for an encounter that could have big consequences for the finals aspirations of both sides.
Adelaide will play its first game since the tragic death of coach Phil Walsh when it travels to Perth for tomorrow night’s critical encounter with the West Coast Eagles.
The Crows regain defenders Ricky Henderson and Jake Lever, while midfielder Riley Knight will be making his debut.
Influential onballer Rory Sloane is out after fracturing his cheekbone for the second time this season.
The Eagles have recalled Matt Rosa at the expense of youngster Liam Duggan.
