MAJOR LAZER

Peace is the Mission

-

DIPLO seems like a jerk, but musically he’s got that magic touch more often than not. Working here as Major Lazer, he fuses pop with dance-hall and reggae to create something special.

Lean On is a pop song as catchy as Mark Waugh in the slips. It’s got the silky sweet voice of Danish singer MØ, plus Diplo and hit-maker DJ Snake providing a midtempo, melodic backdrop. Not quite as amazing is the equally poppy

Powerful. Tarrus Riley is horribly trite. “You charge me up like electricity”. Um, no, stop it. Ellie Goulding is much better on her verse, but can’t save this song.

Be Together is the album’s least tricked-out song, but that works in singer Wild Belle’s favour — she sinks into the tune and finds a confident groove.

Too Original pumps the tempo up and things get silly. It’s all rave synths, thumping beats and

wacky vocals. Blaze Up the Fire follows suit with its buzzing synth and reggae-rap by Chronixx, followed by more F1 race car-paced beats and bass — yowzers. Diplo employs Travi$ Scott, 2 Chainz, Mad Cobra and Pusha T for rhymes on

Night Rider, but he could have just got Pusha in to do the work — he kills. Nearly forgot, there is a song with Ariana Grande, but the line “put your hands up in the sky” made me turn it off on principle.
