Cameron stars in drought breaker

- NEIL CORDY

A MATCH-winning five-goal haul from Jeremy Cameron has snapped a three-game losing streak and moved Greater Western Sydney back into the eight with a 35-point win against St Kilda at Spotless Stadium.

The win was the first without Shane Mumford in the team since he moved to the club last year.

“It’s a big win for our young ruckmen and our midfielders as well,” Giants coach Leon Cameron said.

“It was our best contested game of football for a while. I’m pleased our tackle count nearly hit 100, so to get that right was a step in the right direction.”

After holding the Saints to two first-half goals, the Giants withstood a third-quarter burst when the visitors closed to within 16 points. Four lastquarter goals to one, including the sealer from Cameron, saw GWS home.

The only concern for the Giants was a knee injury to star midfielder Dylan Shiel, who pulled up sharply after scoring the first goal of the second quarter.

“We think it’s going to be minor,” Leon Cameron said.

Cameron’s bag brings his tally to 42 goals and moves him into second spot in the race for the Coleman Medal.

In his first game back from a shoulder injury, Stephen Coniglio was dynamic with 26 possessions, including 12 contested, and laid a gamehigh 16 tackles.

Callan Ward (31 touches) and Adam Treloar (30) were also dominant in the middle.

Nick Riewoldt kicked one goal and gathered plenty of the football but he was limited by Adam Tomlinson in his first game back since Round 2. Riewoldt left the match late with a calf injury.
