Chilcot, Corney, best of brightest

HARVEY Chilcot and Raphaela Corney have been named best athletes at this year’s Tasmanian Age Track and Field Championsh­ips, held at the Domain Athletics Centre over the weekend.

The event, which acts as the key selection event for next month’s Athletics Australia National Junior Championsh­ips in Sydney, involved Tasmania’s best youth athletes from under 14s to under 20s.

The weekend also hosted some open events, with Hamish Peacock of UTAS taking out the men’s javelin with an 83.02m throw to help him qualify for the IAAF World Championsh­ips in London this August.

To be named best, Chilcott, of Eastern Suburbs, ran 6:02.67 to win the under 18 men’s 2000m steeplecha­se while Corney, of UTAS, took out the under 20 women’s pole vault after clearing 3.60m.

Eastern Suburb’s Matthew Hosie also shone with wins in several of the men’s under 20 events, including the 100m, pole vault, long jump, 6kg shot put, 1.75kg discus and javelin.

Fellow Eastern Suburbs member Samuel Field won the under 18 men’s 400m and 800m, and another club mate Liam Shelton won men’s under 18 pole vault, 5kg shot put, 1.5kg discus and 700g javelin.

Sandy Bay’s Jagga Pybus claimed the under 18 men’s long jump and high jump, while North West’s Jack Colgrave was also successful, taking out the under 18 men’s 100m, 200m and 400m hurdles.

In the women’s events Eastern Suburbs’ Kiani Allen took wins in the under 20 women’s long jump, triple jump and 100m events, and club mate Ebony Webb claimed the under 18 2000m steeplecha­se with a time of 7:19.42.

Ova Southern Saints member Bec Kovacic enjoyed wins in the under 18 women’s 100m and 200m, and Eastern Suburbs’ Jane Hickie brought home the under 18 women’s 100m hurdles, high jump and long jump.
